# Alacritty

Published January 1, 2026 · Updated August 10, 2026

GPU-accelerated terminal emulator

Category: Developer Tools · Free · Open source · [Official website](https://alacritty.org)

## Install with Homebrew

`brew install --cask alacritty`

## Quick take

Alacritty remains an excellent free minimal GPU terminal for Mac power users who already live in tmux and dotfiles. It is no longer the uncontested speed king, Ghostty changed that conversation, but for a small, honest, open-source emulator it is still easy to recommend.

Best for: Developers Who Pair Terminals with tmux, Dotfile Minimalists Who Want TOML Not GUIs, Users Who Want Free Cross-Platform Terminal Configs

## What is Alacritty?

Alacritty is a free, open-source, GPU-accelerated terminal emulator written in Rust (Apache 2.0). On Mac it is the minimalist's alternative to iTerm2: no built-in tabs or splits philosophy, pair it with tmux or a window manager, and configuration lives in TOML rather than GUIs. As of August 2026 the latest stable release is 0.17.0 (6 April 2026), following 0.16.x work that fixed macOS IME crashes, AppleFontSmoothing issues, and slowdowns reported on macOS 26.

Alacritty is still alive and actively maintained on GitHub. It is no longer automatically crowned the fastest terminal, Ghostty (native, Mitchell Hashimoto) and continued Kitty/WezTerm development raised the bar, but Alacritty remains a top pick when you want a small surface area, OpenGL rendering, cross-platform configs, and zero account telemetry.

Features that matter daily: Vi mode scrollback, URL/hint launching, search, IPC via `alacritty msg`, Kitty keyboard protocol support, and broad font/ligature choices through the renderer. It will not become a Warp-style AI IDE. That is intentional.

Install via Homebrew cask or GitHub DMG. Runs on Apple Silicon and Intel, including macOS Tahoe 26.x. Competitors: Ghostty, Kitty, WezTerm, iTerm2, Warp, and Apple Terminal.

Day-to-day, Alacritty rewards people who already know their shell. You will spend an evening on font size, padding, keybindings, and a colorscheme import, then stop thinking about the terminal for months. That is the product. When Ghostty or Kitty demos look flashier, remember Alacritty's job is not to be an IDE, it is to paint glyphs quickly and get out of the way while Claude Code, Neovim, or long compile logs stream by. Homebrew cask installs remain the fastest path for most Mac developers, while GitHub Releases matter when you want a specific 0.17.x DMG without waiting on cask bumps. Keep the 0.17.x channel current for the newest macOS input fixes.

## Features

- **GPU-accelerated rendering.** OpenGL-based rendering keeps large scrollback and rapid output smooth on Apple Silicon GPUs. The focus is frame-time consistency rather than bundling a session manager.
- **TOML configuration.** Declarative ~/.config/alacritty/alacritty.toml controls fonts, colors, keybindings, cursor, and window behavior. Version-control your terminal the same way you version-control dotfiles.
- **Vi mode and search.** Navigate scrollback with Vi motions, search buffer contents, and yank selections without leaving keyboard flow.
- **Hints and URL launching.** Regex hints highlight paths and URLs for quick open actions, enough hyperlink productivity without a heavy GUI layer.
- **IPC and multi-window control.** `alacritty msg` sends configuration and window commands to running instances, including get-config retrieval added in the 0.16 line.
- **Cross-platform Rust core.** Same project on macOS, Linux, Windows, and BSD so muscle memory and config travel between machines.
- **macOS 26 stability fixes.** Recent releases addressed IME commit crashes on macOS, AppleFontSmoothing crashes, and performance regressions noted on macOS 26, important for Tahoe users.

## How to Install Alacritty on Mac

Alacritty installs via Homebrew. Configuration is a single TOML file.

1. **Install via Homebrew.** Run `brew install --cask alacritty` to install. Alacritty appears in /Applications.
2. **Create Configuration File.** Create ~/.config/alacritty/alacritty.toml. Alacritty runs with sensible defaults if no config file exists, but you'll want to set your font and color scheme. Start with the example config from Alacritty's GitHub wiki.
3. **Set Your Font.** Add to alacritty.toml:
```toml
[font]
size = 14.0
[font.normal]
family = "JetBrains Mono"
style = "Regular"
```
Install a Nerd Font variant if you use tools that need icons (starship prompt, lsd, etc.).
4. **Install tmux (Recommended).** Run `brew install tmux` for window management. Alacritty + tmux is the intended workflow. Without tmux, you'll need to open multiple Alacritty windows for different tasks.

## Pros

- Free, open source, no account
- Fast GPU rendering with a minimal UI
- TOML config fits developer dotfile workflows
- Active 2026 releases including macOS fixes
- Cross-platform configs between Mac and Linux
- Pairs cleanly with tmux/zellij

## Cons

- No built-in tabs/splits, by design, not an oversight
- Ghostty and Kitty often win pure speed or feature depth in 2026 comparisons
- Steeper first-hour setup than iTerm2 profiles GUI
- No first-party AI/command palette like Warp
- Image protocol / fancy graphics support trails Kitty/Ghostty

## FAQ

### Is Alacritty still maintained in 2026?

Yes. Version 0.17.0 shipped 6 April 2026 with ongoing GitHub activity and macOS fixes in the 0.16-0.17 line.

### Is Alacritty free?

Yes, Apache 2.0 open source with no paid SKU.

### Does Alacritty support macOS Tahoe / Apple Silicon?

Yes. Universal/native Mac builds run on Apple Silicon; recent releases specifically fixed macOS 26-related issues.

### Why are there no tabs?

Project philosophy pushes multiplexing to tmux, zellij, or your window manager so the emulator stays focused on rendering.

### Alacritty vs Ghostty on Mac?

Ghostty often wins ease and raw native feel in 2026 write-ups; Alacritty wins if you want a battle-tested minimal cross-platform TOML setup.

### How do I configure fonts and themes?

Edit alacritty.toml, set font.normal.family, size, and import color schemes. Reload on save.

### Can I use ligatures?

Yes with programming fonts configured in TOML; results depend on the font and Alacritty renderer settings rather than a separate ligatures app.
