# Calibre

Published January 1, 2026 · Updated August 10, 2026

E-book management application

Category: Productivity · Free · Open source · Replaces Kindle (device lock-in) · [Official website](https://calibre-ebook.com)

## Install with Homebrew

`brew install --cask calibre`

## Quick take

Calibre 9.x in 2026 is still the free e-book backbone on Mac if you care about owning files. UI looks secondary to capability. Stay on macOS 14+ for current builds (9.13.0 as of the August 2026 check), keep backups of your library folder, and use the content server when phones need access without a vendor lock-in story.

Best for: Multi-store e-book owners, People side-loading Kindles/Kobos, Researchers with large PDF/EPUB corpora

## What is Calibre?

Calibre is the long-running open-source e-book manager by Kovid Goyal: library database, format conversion, metadata editing, device sync, content server, and e-book editor in one GPLv3 package. If you buy books from multiple stores or need to convert between EPUB, AZW3, PDF, CBZ, and more, Calibre remains the Mac default for owning a library instead of renting one. As of August 2026, the current macOS build is calibre 9.13.0. Official download notes state calibre works on macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) and higher; older macOS releases must use older calibre branches (for example, 7.26 is documented as the last for pre-Sonoma 14, with further older cutoffs listed on the download page). The 9.x line continued rapid point releases through July 2026 (e.g., 9.12 on 31 Jul 2026 with macOS windowing fixes). Installation via calibre-ebook.com or `brew install --cask calibre` is standard. Calibre is still free with optional donations/Patreon, with no freemium module unlocks. The UI remains functional rather than native AppKit-pretty; that tradeoff has not changed. Plugin ecosystems, news recipes, and the content server continue to differentiate it from Apple Books or Kindle apps, which optimize for store lock-in rather than library control. Competitors and adjacent tools: Apple Books (simple, Apple-centric), Amazon Kindle apps (store-bound), Foliate (Linux-leaning readers), and dedicated comic managers. For serious cross-store libraries on Mac, Calibre is still infrastructure. On Mac, drag the official DMG app to Applications (do not run from the DMG) or install the Homebrew cask. Current 9.x needs macOS 14 Sonoma or newer; Ventura and older Macs should use the legacy builds listed on the download notes (7.26 is the documented last pre-Sonoma 14 line). On Apple Silicon and macOS Tahoe 26.x, stay on the current 9.13.0 line and re-check whats-new after point releases. Grant Full Disk Access only if the library lives on external volumes. Back up the whole library folder (including `metadata.db`) before major version jumps. There is no paid tier, but plugin compatibility and device driver notes still change with Kindle and Kobo firmware.

## Features

- **Universal library management.** Catalog thousands of books with metadata, covers, tags, virtual libraries, and saved searches. The library is local files plus a SQLite `metadata.db` you can back up.
- **Format conversion.** Convert among dozens of e-book formats for Kindles, Kobos, apps, and archives, including EPUB, AZW3, PDF, and CBZ paths common on Mac.
- **Metadata editing and bulk ops.** Edit fields, download metadata and covers, and apply bulk transforms with search/replace that scales to large libraries.
- **Device integration.** Send books to e-readers and manage on-device collections when drivers support your hardware. USB sync remains a core workflow for Kindle and Kobo users.
- **Content server.** Run a local web server to browse and download your library from phones or other computers on the network, including OPDS-friendly access for third-party reading apps.
- **E-book editor and polish tools.** Edit EPUB/AZW3 internals, polish files, and fix common quality issues before side-loading to devices.
- **Plugin ecosystem.** Extend Calibre with community plugins for stores, quality checks, page counts, FanFicFare, and custom workflows from Preferences > Plugins.

## How to Install Calibre on Mac

The reliable way to install Calibre on macOS is the official DMG from calibre-ebook.com or the Homebrew cask, which tracks the signed upstream binary.

1. **Install Homebrew.** If you haven't yet, open Terminal and run: /bin/bash -c '$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)'
2. **Install Calibre.** Run the following command to install the latest stable cask: brew install --cask calibre
3. **Verify Installation.** Launch Calibre from your Applications folder. You should see the Welcome Wizard. Verify the version by clicking calibre in the menu bar > About calibre to ensure you are on 9.x (9.13.0 as of August 2026) if your Mac runs macOS 14 or later.

## Pros

- Unmatched conversion and library control
- Free GPLv3 with continuous 9.x releases in 2026
- Content server for whole-home access
- Huge plugin ecosystem
- Works offline; your library is local files + database

## Cons

- UI looks dated versus native Mac apps
- Learning curve for conversion heuristics and plugins
- Large libraries need disk and patience
- macOS 14+ required for current 9.x; older OS needs legacy builds
- No first-party polished cloud sync product

## Closer look: Architecture and ecosystem

Calibre is a long-lived technical project that moved through multiple eras of computing while keeping backward compatibility. It is also a clear case of Python succeeding as a desktop application stack.

## FAQ

### What is the latest Calibre version for Mac?

9.13.0 on the official macOS download page as of the August 2026 check. Verify whats-new for newer point releases after that date.

### Which macOS versions work?

Current 9.x needs macOS 14 Sonoma or newer. Older OS versions must download legacy calibre builds listed on the official download notes (for example 7.26 for pre-Sonoma 14).

### Is Calibre free?

Yes. GPLv3 open source with optional donations.

### Can Calibre remove DRM?

Calibre itself focuses on library management and conversion. DRM removal depends on separate tools/plugins and legal context in your jurisdiction. Follow local law and store terms.

### How do I install on Mac?

Download the DMG from calibre-ebook.com (drag to Applications; do not run from the DMG) or run `brew install --cask calibre`.

### Calibre vs Apple Books?

Apple Books is simpler and prettier for Apple-purchased reading. Calibre is for multi-source libraries, conversion, and ownership workflows across EPUB, AZW3, PDF, and more.

### Does it support Apple Silicon?

Yes. Modern builds run on Apple Silicon Macs that meet the macOS 14+ requirement for the 9.x line.
