Adaptive brightness for external displays

Category: System Utilities · Free · Replaces DisplayBuddy ($24.99) · [Official website](https://lunar.fyi)

## Install with Homebrew

`brew install --cask lunar`

## Quick take

Lunar fills a gap Apple has ignored for years: controlling external monitor brightness from your Mac. The free tier already delivers keyboard DDC control, sub-zero dimming, CLI and multi-monitor basics, with daily Manual and Shortcuts caps. Lunar Pro's Sync Mode and related adaptive features make an external monitor feel like a native Mac display and the $23 lifetime price with a 14-day trial remains fair for a daily-driver utility. Active 2026 maintenance through v6.10.4 (Shortcuts SDK rebuild, energy impact, Sync wake, OSD fixes) keeps it trustworthy on Tahoe. The main friction is still DDC compatibility through some docks, when hardware DDC fails, gamma fallback helps and pairing with BetterDisplay covers HiDPI needs Lunar doesn't chase.

Best for: Anyone with an external monitor who's tired of using physical monitor buttons, Night owls who need sub-zero dimming for dark environments, Multi-monitor users who want synchronized brightness, MacBook users who want Sync Mode adaptive brightness on external displays, Users who already run BetterDisplay and need a dedicated brightness automation layer

## What is Lunar?

Lunar is a display brightness and contrast controller for macOS that solves a problem Apple has ignored for years: you can't natively adjust the brightness of external monitors using your Mac's keyboard. Apple's brightness keys only control the built-in display. If you have an external monitor, Dell, LG, BenQ, ASUS, Samsung, whatever, you're stuck reaching for the monitor's physical buttons, navigating through OSD menus and doing this every time the room lighting changes.

Lunar fixes this by communicating with your monitor using DDC/CI (Display Data Channel Command Interface), a protocol that lets your Mac send brightness, contrast and volume commands directly to the monitor's firmware. Press your Mac's brightness keys and Lunar adjusts both your built-in and external displays simultaneously. The brightness slider in Control Center works for external monitors too. It feels like the monitor is natively integrated into macOS, which is exactly how it should work.

Beyond basic brightness control, Lunar offers adaptive brightness modes (Sync, Location, Sensor and Clock), schedule-based brightness curves, per-app brightness presets, FaceLight, BlackOut and fine-grained color controls. The free tier includes DDC control, sub-zero dimming (software overlay below the hardware backlight minimum), brightness and volume keys, a CLI, input switching and multi-monitor support, with Manual Mode capped at 100 adjustments per day and Shortcuts limited to 100 actions per day. Lunar Pro ($23 lifetime, 14-day trial) unlocks unlimited adjustments plus Sync/Location/Sensor/Clock modes, App Presets, XDR Brightness, FaceLight and BlackOut.

Lunar is developed by Alin Panaitiu and remains actively maintained, latest release v6.10.4 (2026-05-25). It requires macOS 11 or newer, ships native Apple Silicon and Intel builds and runs on macOS Tahoe 26.x. For anyone with an external monitor, which is most developers, designers and professionals, Lunar is the kind of utility that makes you wonder how you lived without it.

## Features

- **DDC/CI Control.** Lunar sends DDC/CI commands over DisplayPort or HDMI to control your monitor's brightness, contrast and volume at the hardware level. This means the monitor's own backlight adjusts, not a software overlay. The result is identical to pressing the buttons on the monitor itself, but controlled from your Mac's keyboard or menu bar. DDC/CI works with most external monitors from Dell, LG, BenQ, ASUS, Samsung, HP and others. Some monitors (particularly USB-C-only ones or those with limited firmware) don't support DDC/CI, in which case Lunar falls back to gamma/software brightness control.
- **Adaptive Brightness (Sync Mode).** When you have a MacBook with an ambient light sensor, Lunar Pro's Sync Mode can match your external monitor's brightness to your laptop's. As the room gets darker, your MacBook dims its built-in display and Lunar dims your external display proportionally. As sunlight hits your desk, both brighten together. This is automatic: Lunar reads the built-in display's brightness and maps it to DDC/CI values for your external monitor. You can adjust the mapping curve if the automatic behavior is too aggressive or too subtle. Community consensus treats Sync Mode as the main reason to buy Pro.
- **Sub-Zero Dimming.** Most monitors can't go below about 20% brightness via DDC/CI, the backlight has a hardware minimum. Lunar's free tier includes sub-zero dimming by applying a dark overlay on top of the display output, letting you reduce effective brightness below the hardware minimum. This is a lifesaver for working in dark environments or at night when even the lowest monitor brightness is uncomfortably bright. It's a software trick, so contrast is reduced, but it's better than squinting.
- **Per-App Brightness Presets.** Lunar Pro can automatically change brightness when you switch between apps via App Presets. Set your code editor to 40% brightness and your browser to 60%. When you switch from VS Code to Chrome, Lunar adjusts the monitor brightness automatically. This sounds gimmicky but is genuinely useful: coding on a dark-themed editor is comfortable at low brightness, while reading documentation in a browser benefits from higher brightness.
- **Location, Sensor and Clock Modes.** Beyond Sync Mode, Lunar Pro offers Location Mode (brightness based on sun position), Sensor Mode (external ambient light sensors such as Xiaomi Mijia) and Clock Mode (schedule-based brightness curves through the day). Clock Mode works independently of macOS Night Shift (which changes color temperature, not brightness). The schedule editor lets you define custom curves with multiple control points throughout the day.
- **XDR Brightness, FaceLight and BlackOut.** Apple's Pro Display XDR and MacBook Pro Liquid Retina XDR screens support brightness above the standard 500 nits. macOS only enables this for HDR content by default. Lunar Pro can unlock XDR brightness for SDR content when you need daylight readability. FaceLight brightens the built-in display as a soft fill light for video calls. BlackOut can blank or dim displays for focus, presentations or sleep setups.
- **Keyboard Hotkeys and CLI.** Lunar hooks into the macOS brightness keys (F1/F2) and extends them to external monitors. When you press the brightness key, Lunar adjusts the external monitor along with (or instead of) the built-in display. A CLI (`lunar set brightness 50`) and Shortcuts actions support scripting and automation, free Shortcut actions are limited to 100 per day.
- **Contrast, Volume and Input Switching.** Beyond brightness, Lunar can adjust contrast and volume via DDC/CI on monitors that support it and switch input sources from the Mac. Volume control is useful for monitors with built-in speakers, adjust the monitor's speaker volume without touching the OSD. Contrast adjustment helps fine-tune readability for different content types.

## How to Install Lunar on Mac

Lunar is available via Homebrew or direct download from lunar.fyi. It supports macOS 11+, Apple Silicon and Intel, including Tahoe 26.x.

1. **Install via Homebrew.** Run `brew install --cask lunar` in Terminal. The app installs to /Applications. For the latest version (v6.10.4 as of 2026-05-25), you can also download directly from https://lunar.fyi/.
2. **Launch and Grant Permissions.** Open Lunar. It may request Accessibility permission for keyboard shortcut integration. Grant it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
3. **Verify DDC/CI Works.** Open Lunar's preferences and check if your external monitor appears with DDC/CI status. If it shows DDC supported, hardware brightness control works. If DDC fails (common with some docks), Lunar can fall back to gamma/software dimming.
4. **Configure Sync Mode (Pro).** If you have a MacBook with an ambient light sensor and Lunar Pro, enable Sync Mode in preferences. This links your external monitor's brightness to your MacBook's ambient light readings. Free users can still use Manual Mode (100 adjustments/day) and keyboard brightness keys.

## Pros

- DDC/CI hardware brightness control for external monitors, the way it should work
- Sync Mode and other adaptive modes keep external monitors matched to ambient light
- Sub-zero dimming on the free tier goes below hardware minimum for dark environments
- Keyboard brightness keys work on external monitors
- App Presets adjust brightness automatically when switching apps
- XDR brightness unlock, FaceLight and BlackOut for Pro users
- CLI and Shortcuts support for automation
- Native Apple Silicon and Intel builds; actively maintained through Tahoe 26.x
- Works with most major monitor brands (Dell, LG, BenQ, ASUS, Samsung)
- Pairs cleanly with BetterDisplay for users who also need HiDPI control

## Cons

- DDC/CI doesn't work with all monitors or all connection types, some docks strip the signal
- Sub-zero dimming reduces contrast (software overlay, not hardware)
- Free Manual Mode and Shortcuts caps (100/day) push power users toward Pro
- Adaptive brightness can occasionally overshoot or lag behind lighting changes
- Apple Studio Display uses proprietary brightness control, so behavior differs from DDC monitors

## Deep dive: How DDC/CI Works and Why Apple Doesn't Support It

DDC/CI (Display Data Channel Command Interface) is a standard that's been around since the 1990s. It allows a computer to send commands to a monitor over the same cable that carries the video signal.

## FAQ

### Does Lunar work with my monitor?

Most likely. Lunar supports DDC/CI, which works with most Dell, LG, BenQ, ASUS, Samsung and HP monitors via DisplayPort or HDMI. Some monitors disable DDC/CI by default, check your monitor's OSD settings. USB-C docks sometimes strip DDC/CI signals; Lunar can fall back to gamma/software dimming when hardware control fails.

### What's the difference between Lunar and MonitorControl?

MonitorControl is free and handles basic DDC/CI brightness/contrast/volume. Lunar adds Sync/Location/Sensor/Clock adaptive modes, App Presets, XDR brightness, FaceLight, BlackOut and a freemium Pro model. If you just need keyboard brightness control, MonitorControl is enough. If you want automatic Sync Mode adaptation, Lunar Pro is worth it.

### Does Lunar work with Apple Studio Display?

Apple Studio Display uses a proprietary brightness protocol, not DDC/CI. Lunar can still interact with Apple displays via system APIs for some features, but behavior differs from third-party DDC monitors.

### What is sub-zero dimming?

When your monitor can't go any dimmer via DDC/CI (hardware minimum), Lunar applies a dark software overlay to reduce effective brightness further. It is available on the free tier. It reduces contrast slightly, but it's better than squinting in a dark room.

### Does Lunar drain battery?

Minimal impact when idle. DDC/CI commands are sent when brightness changes. Adaptive modes poll sensors periodically; v6.10.2 specifically addressed energy impact. CPU usage remains low for normal desktop use.

### Can I control brightness from the command line?

Yes. Lunar includes a CLI tool: `lunar set brightness 50` adjusts brightness to 50%. This is useful for scripting, cron and Shortcuts automation (free Shortcut actions are capped at 100/day).

### Does Lunar work with f.lux or Night Shift?

Yes. f.lux and Night Shift adjust color temperature (warmer colors at night). Lunar adjusts brightness. They complement each other without conflicts.

### Why doesn't DDC/CI work through my USB-C dock?

Some USB-C docks and hubs don't pass DDC/CI signals through. Try connecting the monitor directly via DisplayPort or HDMI with a USB-C adapter. When hardware DDC fails, Lunar's gamma fallback can still dim the display, many users hit this path with cheaper docks.

### Is Lunar Pro worth $23?

If you use an external monitor daily and want Sync Mode or other adaptive automation, yes. The free tier covers DDC keys, sub-zero dimming, CLI and input switching with daily Manual/Shortcuts caps. Pro's $23 lifetime license (14-day trial) removes those caps and unlocks the modes most people buy Lunar for.

### Should I use Lunar with BetterDisplay?

Often yes. Lunar specializes in adaptive brightness and DDC automation; BetterDisplay specializes in HiDPI, resolutions and virtual displays. Community guides commonly recommend running both rather than treating them as mutually exclusive.

### Can Lunar control multiple monitors independently?

Yes. Each connected monitor appears separately in Lunar's interface. You can set independent brightness, contrast and adaptive settings for each one.
