System monitoring dashboard with historical analytics

Category: System Utilities · Free · [Official website](https://macpulse.app/)

## Install with Homebrew

`brew install --cask macpulse`

## Quick take

MacPulse earns a strong recommendation when you want a paid Mac monitor that explains itself. The Insights Engine and Performance Sessions separate it from Stats and push past Activity Monitor; Direct edition fan curves and Tahoe Ask Insights reward buyers who avoid the sandboxed App Store cut. At €14.99 Personal with a real 14-day trial, the price is competitive with iStat Menus, buy Direct if you care about thermal control and on-device Ask Insights.

Best for: Users who want plain-English system insights, not only live gauges, Developers and creatives who record Performance Sessions during builds or renders, Buyers who need Direct-only fan curves, SMART, Bluetooth batteries, or Ask Insights on Tahoe

## What is MacPulse?

MacPulse is a commercial macOS system monitor from Vuink (macpulse.app), currently at v1.2.9. It is not free open-source software and it is not the unrelated GitHub project at github.com/vluncasu/macpulse. MacPulse combines menu-bar live metrics with a rule-based Insights Engine that explains CPU, memory, disk, thermal, battery and network patterns in plain English, positioning itself as a modern Activity Monitor and iStat Menus alternative for people who want analysis, not only gauges.

The app ships seven modules: CPU (P-core and E-core breakdown on Apple Silicon), Memory (wired/compressed/cached pressure), Network (per-interface throughput plus private/public IP), Disk (I/O rates and SMART health), Thermal & Fans (SMC temperatures, power sensors, custom fan curves), Battery (health, cycles, plus Bluetooth accessory batteries) and GPU (IOKit/Metal utilization). History stays local. The app keeps roughly 30 days of samples in SQLite and downsamples older data so trends remain readable. Performance Sessions record intensive workloads at one-second resolution and export CSV when you need to dig in later. Menu-bar items can show as icon, text, sparkline, or text plus sparkline. WidgetKit widgets sit on the desktop and show averaged health at a glance.

Pricing is one-time after a 14-day full-access trial: Personal €14.99 (1 Mac, lifetime updates) or Family €49.99 (5 Macs). It is also sold on the Mac App Store as "System Insights" for €14.99 and separately via Setapp. The Direct (LemonSqueezy) build from macpulse.app includes features the sandboxed App Store edition cannot: fan control, SMART disk health, Bluetooth batteries, power sensors, top-process depth, per-process activity history and Ask Insights, an on-device Apple Intelligence chat available on macOS 26 Tahoe Direct edition only. Requirements are macOS 14 Sonoma or later on Apple Silicon and Intel; Ask Insights additionally needs an Apple Intelligence-eligible Mac on macOS 26+ with Apple Intelligence enabled.

Competitors include iStat Menus 7 (~$11.99 one-time, menu-bar depth), Stats (free MIT open source, real-time widgets), TG Pro (~$20, fan/thermal specialist), MenuMeters-style simple meters and Apple's Activity Monitor. Choose MacPulse when you want plain-English insights, session recording and Direct-edition thermal/Ask Insights features; choose Stats if you only need free live widgets; choose iStat Menus if you prefer Bjango's mature widget kit without an Insights Engine.

## Features

- **Insights Engine.** MacPulse's primary differentiator versus iStat Menus and Stats. The Insights Engine analyzes historical SQLite data and surfaces plain-English findings: thermal throttling windows, peak CPU hours, memory pressure streaks, SSD growth projections, battery drain anomalies and network spikes, with practical recommendations instead of raw percentages alone.
- **Performance Sessions.** Record CPU, GPU, memory, thermals, fan speeds and FPS at 1-second resolution while gaming, rendering, compiling, or debugging. Name and compare sessions, then export full CSV for Excel, Numbers, or Python analysis. Session recording is the workflow for proving what happened during a specific workload rather than guessing from a live graph.
- **Historical Analytics (30-day SQLite).** Every sampled metric is persisted locally with intelligent downsampling across 24-hour, 7-day and 30-day views. Trends reveal overnight CPU activity, week-over-week memory pressure and gradual disk fill rates that point-in-time monitors miss. Data stays on-device; there is no cloud telemetry requirement for core monitoring.
- **Menu Bar Widgets & Sparklines.** Four status-item modes, Icon Only, Text, Sparkline, or Text + Sparkline, keep CPU, memory, or network speeds visible without opening a window. Click the item for a compact popover with mini gauges, top processes, network IPs, thermal status, GPU utilization and battery overview.
- **Seven Monitoring Modules.** CPU (per-core P/E clusters), Memory (composition and pressure), Network (throughput and IP alerts), Disk (I/O plus SMART on Direct), Thermal & Fans (SMC sensors, power watts, fan curves on Direct), Battery (health/cycles plus Bluetooth accessories on Direct) and GPU (Metal/IOKit utilization and temperature).
- **Fan Curves & Thermal Control (Direct).** Direct edition lets you drag custom fan curves with presets for quieter or cooler profiles, comparable to TG Pro's specialty, but inside a full system monitor. Combined with SMC power sensors (system/CPU/GPU/memory watts), this is the edition power users buy when App Store sandboxing is too limiting.
- **Ask Insights (Apple Intelligence, Tahoe Direct).** New in 1.2.2+ on Direct edition for macOS 26 Tahoe: ask plain-English questions about your Mac's history ("How high did CPU go yesterday?") answered entirely on-device via Apple Intelligence, no API keys, no cloud model calls. Answers ground in the same SQLite history the Insights Engine maintains; the feature simply does not appear on older macOS or in the App Store edition.
- **WidgetKit Desktop Widgets.** Small, medium and large widgets show averaged system health (CPU, RAM, disk, network) refreshed on a meaningful interval so the desktop reflects trends rather than noisy second-by-second flicker.

## How to Install MacPulse on Mac

Prefer the official Direct trial from macpulse.app (full feature set) or the Mac App Store listing branded System Insights. A Homebrew cask also ships the current Direct-line build (verified macpulse 1.2.9). Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

1. **Download Direct or Install via Homebrew.** Visit https://macpulse.app/ and download the free 14-day trial (LemonSqueezy Direct build), or run `brew install --cask macpulse` if you manage Macs via Homebrew. Alternatively, install "System Insights" from the Mac App Store if you prefer MAS updates, knowing sandboxing removes fan control, SMART, Bluetooth batteries, Ask Insights and related Direct-only sensors.
2. **Launch and Grant Permissions.** Open MacPulse from Applications. Grant any Privacy & Security prompts needed for monitoring. On Direct, enable fan control permissions if you plan custom curves. Confirm macOS version: Ask Insights only appears on macOS 26+ with Apple Intelligence enabled.
3. **Configure Menu Bar & Modules.** Pick a status-item mode (sparklines are excellent for at-a-glance trends). Enable the modules you care about, CPU, Memory and Thermal cover most developer pain. Leave Widgets on the desktop if you want averaged health without opening the app.
4. **Buy Personal or Family After Trial.** After the 14-day full trial, purchase Personal (€14.99, 1 Mac) or Family (€49.99, 5 Macs) for lifetime updates. Setapp subscribers can use MacPulse through Setapp instead of a separate license.

## Pros

## FAQ

### Is MacPulse free?

No. MacPulse offers a 14-day full-access trial, then Personal (€14.99 one-time, 1 Mac) or Family (€49.99, 5 Macs) with lifetime updates. It is also on the Mac App Store as System Insights (€14.99) and on Setapp. It is not free OSS.

### What is the difference between Direct and Mac App Store editions?

Direct (LemonSqueezy from macpulse.app) includes fan control, SMART disk health, Bluetooth batteries, power sensors, top-process/per-process history and Ask Insights on macOS 26+. The App Store System Insights build is sandboxed and omits those capabilities while still offering core monitoring and Insights Engine features that sandboxing allows.

### What is Ask Insights?

Ask Insights (new in 1.2.2+, Direct only) lets you chat about your Mac's recorded history using on-device Apple Intelligence on macOS 26 Tahoe. Nothing leaves your Mac; it is not a cloud LLM API feature. It requires an Apple Intelligence-eligible Mac with Apple Intelligence enabled.

### How does MacPulse compare to iStat Menus and Stats?

iStat Menus wins on long-established menu-bar polish; Stats wins on free open-source widgets. MacPulse differentiates with the Insights Engine, Performance Sessions, 30-day SQLite analytics and Direct-only thermal/Ask Insights features. Many users run Stats for basics and evaluate MacPulse when they want explanations and session captures.

### Does MacPulse support Apple Silicon and Intel?

Yes. It is a universal binary for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs on macOS 14 Sonoma or later. CPU views expose P-core and E-core breakdown on Apple Silicon. Ask Insights additionally needs macOS 26+ and Apple Intelligence eligibility.

### Can I install MacPulse with Homebrew?

Yes. A Homebrew cask exists (`brew install --cask macpulse`) and currently tracks v1.2.9. Official Direct download from macpulse.app and the Mac App Store System Insights listing remain first-class options depending on which feature set you need.

### Is this the same as the macpulse GitHub open-source project?

No. The curated Bundl app is the commercial product at macpulse.app by Vuink. Unrelated repositories that reuse the name are not this product and should not be used as the install source for these docs.
