Native app email client for Gmail

Category: Communication · Paid · [Official website](https://mimestream.com/)

## Install with Homebrew

`brew install --cask mimestream`

## Quick take

Mimestream is still the clearest native Mac answer for people who live inside Gmail. Direct Gmail API sync, tracking prevention, profile-aware multi-account workflows and honest family sharing make the $49.99/year Individual plan easy to defend for daily Mac email. The tradeoffs are equally clear: Gmail-only, subscription-only, Mac-only for now and mobile still pending. If that box matches your life, buy it. If you need iPhone parity tomorrow or non-Google accounts, pick another client and revisit when (if) iOS ships.

Best for: Gmail and Google Workspace users who want a true native Mac client, Professionals managing multiple Google accounts with working-hours boundaries, Households that can use Individual family sharing within five devices, Privacy-minded readers who want tracker blocking without a sync proxy

## What is Mimestream?

Mimestream is a native macOS email client built exclusively for Gmail and Google Workspace. Founder Neil Jhaveri previously worked on Apple Mail and the product reads like a deliberate answer to a narrow question: what if a Mac mail app optimized only for Google’s stack instead of every protocol under the sun? The result is a sandboxed, notarized Swift/AppKit-class native client that talks to the Gmail API directly, labels, categories, filters, aliases, vacation responders and search behave like Gmail, not like a lowest-common-denominator IMAP approximation. Distribution is direct from mimestream.com, not the Mac App Store. That choice keeps Individual pricing at $49.99 per year or $4.99 per month, with a Group plan at the same per-seat rates, a 14-day free trial that needs no credit card, free family sharing on Individual licenses and a five-device cap. There is no lifetime purchase. Requires macOS 12 Monterey or newer and runs on Apple Silicon and Intel. Privacy posture is a headline feature: tracking prevention blocks pixels from 75+ common trackers, credentials and mail data stay on-device and sync is a direct connection to Google rather than an intermediary Mimestream mail server. Multiple accounts get color-coded profiles, unified or separate inboxes, working-hours notification schedules and Focus Filters. Competitors in 2026 include Apple Mail, Spark, Airmail, Superhuman, Outlook for Mac, Canary and Shortwave. Cult of Mac and other coverage note iPad beta work and an aspirational iOS timeframe around iOS 27,useful signal, not a confirmed ship date. If you need mobile Mimestream today, you still wait. If you live on Mac plus Gmail, Mimestream remains the most considered native client in that intersection.

## Features

- **Native Gmail API Sync.** Mimestream uses Google’s Gmail API instead of generic IMAP, which unlocks accurate labels with colors and visibility, server-side filter management, conversation threading that matches the web UI, Gmail search operators, alias sending and vacation response configuration. Sync feels closer to push than classic IMAP polling and spam handling follows Google’s own classification rather than a separate client heuristic.
- **Inbox Categories and Labels.** Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums tabs work as they do in Gmail, syncing bidirectionally so triage in Mimestream matches the browser and mobile Gmail apps. Full label support includes nesting and color cues. List filters (unread, starred and similar) help shrink a busy account to you can act on mail without abandoning Gmail’s organizational model.
- **Multiple Accounts and Profiles.** Add personal, work and side-project Google accounts in one window. Assign profile colors, choose unified or separate inboxes and set per-account notification schedules for working hours. Focus Filters silence non-essential profiles when a macOS Focus mode is active, which is how remote workers keep deep work intact without logging out of accounts.
- **Tracking Prevention and Local Privacy.** Mimestream blocks trackers from 75+ common email tracking services so open-pixel marketers cannot silently record reads. Remote content stays gated until you allow it. Tokens and message data remain on your Mac; the app connects directly to Gmail rather than routing mail through Mimestream-operated sync infrastructure. The build is sandboxed and Apple-notarized despite living outside the Mac App Store.
- **Templates, Aliases and Fast Compose.** Saved templates with variables speed repetitive replies. Gmail aliases appear in the from picker. Send and Archive (⇧⌘⏎), Undo Send, markdown/code formatting and mentions keep composition close to power-user Gmail habits without the browser chrome. These writing tools are why heavy responders stay out of the web UI.
- **Calendar Invitation Handling.** Accept or decline meeting invites inside Mimestream while viewing availability from Google Calendar or calendars surfaced through Apple Calendar. Vacation responders can be configured without bouncing to Gmail settings. For calendar-heavy professionals, staying in the mail thread while checking free/busy removes a constant app switch.
- **Native macOS Integration.** System notifications, trackpad swipe triage, Dark Mode reformatting, multiple windows, menu bar extra, Continuity Camera, image markup, Handoff-friendly workflows and Apple Silicon performance are first-class. Keyboard shortcuts follow Mac conventions and are customizable. The point is not feature count versus Spark,it is how little friction a day of Gmail feels when the client is actually a Mac citizen.
- **Labs Snooze and Offline Cache.** Snooze (Labs) parks non-urgent threads until a chosen time. Offline cache lets you read, compose and organize recent mail without connectivity; sends and archives queue until the network returns. Search covers cached content, with the usual caveat that brand-new server mail appears after reconnect.

## How to Install Mimestream on Mac

Mimestream is distributed directly from the developer site (not the Mac App Store). It requires macOS 12 Monterey or newer and runs natively on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.

1. **Download Mimestream.** Visit https://mimestream.com/download, download the DMG and save it to your Downloads folder. The site serves the Universal build for current Macs.
2. **Install the Application.** Open the DMG, drag Mimestream into Applications, eject the disk image and launch from Applications or Launchpad. Gatekeeper should accept the notarized Developer ID signature.
3. **Add a Google Account.** Click Add Account, complete Google’s OAuth consent flow and grant the requested Gmail scopes. Mimestream never sees your Google password. Repeat for additional Gmail or Google Workspace accounts.
4. **Start or Convert the Trial.** Use the 14-day free trial with no credit card. When ready, subscribe to Individual or Group from the in-app subscription flow or https://mimestream.com/pricing/.

## Pros

- Native Mac client with direct Gmail API sync, labels, categories, filters and search work like Gmail
- Tracking prevention for 75+ services plus on-device tokens and no intermediary mail sync server
- Strong multi-account profiles, working hours, Focus Filters and unified inbox options
- Individual plan includes family sharing and five devices at $49.99/year or $4.99/month
- Sandboxed, notarized direct distribution with a no-card 14-day trial

## Cons

- Gmail/Google Workspace only,no Outlook, Exchange, iCloud, Yahoo, or generic IMAP
- Subscription-only with no lifetime purchase option
- Mac-only today; iOS remains planned/aspirational (Cult of Mac cites an iOS 27 timeframe, not a ship date)
- Not on the Mac App Store, so installation and licensing differ from typical MAS apps

## Closer look: Why Mimestream Stays Gmail-Only

Mimestream’s strategy is the opposite of universal mail clients: constrain the provider surface so the Mac UI can expose Google’s real model instead of IMAP fiction.

## FAQ

### Is Mimestream free to use?

There is a fully functional 14-day free trial with no credit card. After the trial, Individual or Group subscription is required. There is no permanent free tier and no lifetime license.

### Does Mimestream work with Outlook, Exchange, or iCloud Mail?

No. Mimestream supports Gmail and Google Workspace only. Multi-provider needs belong in Apple Mail, Spark, Airmail, Outlook, or similar clients.

### How much does Mimestream cost?

Individual and Group seats are $49.99 per year or $4.99 per month (USD, taxes may apply). Individual includes family sharing and up to five devices. Group adds centralized billing and seat management.

### Can I share Mimestream with my family?

Yes on Individual plans for immediate family in the same household (partners, children, parents). The five-device limit still applies across the shared license. Family members sign into your Mimestream account for activation; they do not receive your Gmail login.

### Is there an iOS or iPad app?

Mimestream is Mac-first. Reporting such as Cult of Mac’s review discusses iPad beta work and an aspirational iOS 27 timeframe, but there is no confirmed public ship date. Plan on Gmail’s mobile apps (or another client) for phones today.

### Why isn’t Mimestream on the Mac App Store?

Direct sales let Mimestream price lower and offer Group licensing that App Store subscription infrastructure would complicate. The direct build is still sandboxed, notarized and Developer ID signed. The team has said App Store availability is more likely if/when iOS ships, possibly with limitations and different pricing.

### Is my email data safe with Mimestream?

Mail data and auth tokens stay on your device. Connections go directly to Google’s Gmail API without a Mimestream sync proxy. Tracking prevention blocks 75+ common trackers and the app is sandboxed and notarized.

### How does Mimestream compare to Apple Mail for Gmail?

Apple Mail is free and multi-provider but talks to Gmail more like IMAP. Mimestream’s API integration preserves labels, categories, filters and Gmail search more faithfully, adds tracking prevention and templates and feels faster for heavy Gmail users,at the cost of a subscription and Gmail exclusivity.

### How do I cancel?

Sign in at https://accounts.mimestream.com, open Billing and cancel. Annual plans may qualify for a 30-day refund via support; monthly plans keep access through the paid period without a prorated refund.

### Can I use Mimestream offline?

Yes for recent cached mail, read, compose and organize offline, with sends and archive actions syncing later. Brand-new server messages appear after you reconnect.
