# Nextcloud

Published January 1, 2026 · Updated August 10, 2026

Self-hosted productivity platform

Category: Productivity · Free · Open source · Replaces Dropbox ($12/mo) · [Official website](https://nextcloud.com)

## Install with Homebrew

`brew install --cask nextcloud`

## Quick take

Nextcloud is the default private cloud if you are willing to run the server side properly. Finder virtual files make the Mac side pleasant, and Files, Talk, Groupware and Office cover daily needs. For production use track client releases carefully. Enterprise list pricing starts at 100 users, home labs pay with hardware and maintenance time.

Best for: Organizations that must self-host collaboration data, Mac users needing Finder virtual files against a private server, Teams replacing Google Drive/Dropbox with FOSS Hub apps

## What is Nextcloud?

August 2026 status: Nextcloud Hub **26** and the **26** follow on releases in winter and spring 2026 are the current server line. Desktop clients for macOS have moved to date aligned versioning on the **33 and 34** line. Download pages show recent builds like **34.0.1** from 25 June 2026 with macOS 13 or later packages, and legacy builds for older macOS. Pricing for self hosted remains free software plus support subscriptions: **Standard 71.29 euros**, **Premium 104.99 euros**, **Ultimate 204.75 euros** per user per year starting at 100 users, net without VAT. For smaller teams there is Nextcloud One managed hosting. The macOS client integrates with Finder through File Provider virtual files and has seen frequent point releases.

Nextcloud is a self hosted alternative to Dropbox, Google Drive and iCloud that started as a 2016 fork of ownCloud. The early team included Frank Karlitschek and other core contributors who wanted the codebase to stay fully open rather than split between community and enterprise editions. Today it is the most widely deployed self hosted collaboration stack, with more than 500,000 servers listed in project figures.

Unlike a public cloud where custody sits with the provider, you run Nextcloud on your own hardware or rented VPS. That can be a Raspberry Pi, a Synology NAS, or a small server in a European data center. For Mac users the key integration is Finder. The client shows the full server file tree while keeping files as placeholders until you open them, so a 256 or 512 GB MacBook can browse a larger library without local copies of everything. The client builds are native for Apple Silicon.

Hub bundles Files, Talk for calls and chat, Groupware for calendars and contacts, Office through Collabora or OnlyOffice, and Assistant for on premises helpers. You enable only what you need as apps and add more from the store inside the server. That modularity is why the same binary can back a home Pi and a larger organization with separate database and storage layers.

## Features

- **Nextcloud Hub 26 & Modern Desktop Clients.** Winter 2026 and spring 2026 brought Hub 26 with the usual Files, Talk, Groupware, Office and Assistant updates, plus federation and on premises assistant work that keeps models on your own infrastructure. Desktop clients adopted semantic 33 and 34 versioning with macOS sandboxing fixes and frequent point releases into mid 2026. The 34.x desktop line tracks the server line and has been releasing fixes into mid 2026, so updating the Mac client near the server update avoids mismatch quirks.
- **Virtual Files (VFS) for macOS.** The Mac client implements virtual files through Apple's File Provider API. You see the whole remote tree in Finder as zero byte placeholders. A double click streams the file and caches it locally. Right click gives Make available offline and Free up space, so you keep active folders local for travel while the archive stays on the server. On smaller SSDs this is the difference between usable and full.
- **Nextcloud Talk.** Talk adds audio and video meetings and chat inside the same server. Screen sharing, whiteboard and browser based calls run over WebRTC, so media stays peer to peer. It plugs into Files so you can drop a document into a chat or attach it to an invite without leaving the Hub. Enterprise packaging adds SIP bridging where needed. You do not need Zoom or Teams for routine internal meetings. You create or join a room from the browser or phone, share a file into it, and stay on the same login you already use for Files.
- **End-to-End Encryption (E2EE).** Files are already encrypted in transit and at rest on the server. For sensitive folders the client supports end to end encryption where keys are generated on the Mac and never sent to the server. Even a storage admin cannot read those folders. Group sharing is supported while preserving the zero knowledge shape for the provider. It fits safes for legal or health related folders where even the admin should not be able to open contents.
- **Nextcloud Groupware.** Groupware speaks CalDAV and CardDAV, so it syncs with the built in macOS Calendar and Contacts apps across Mac, iPhone and iPad without routing private data through a third party. The web UI handles shared calendars, resource booking and recurring events. For families and small organizations it can replace iCloud sync for that data.
- **Collaborative Editing with Nextcloud Office.** Nextcloud Office renders DOCX, XLSX and PPTX in the browser through Collabora Online or OnlyOffice with real time collaboration. You see cursors move as others edit, similar to Google Docs, and you avoid passing attachments and merging versions. Version conflict handling stays server side, so two people editing the same paragraph do not create silent overwrites.
- **Finder Integration & Share Context Menu.** The Finder integration adds share, view activity and status badges directly to the context menu. You can share a file with an internal user, create a public link with a password and expiry, and set permissions without opening the web UI. Icon overlays show syncing, synced, shared or error states so you know where things stand at a glance. The same menu lets you set view or edit rights and keep internal shares separate from public links.
- **File Versioning and Activity Stream.** Every file keeps a version history. If you overwrite or delete something on the Mac you can restore it from the web interface or client history. The Versions tab shows prior states by time, and the Activity stream records uploads, shares, comments and edits across users. That trail matters in team workflows where knowing who changed what is part of the job. Admins can browse that stream in the web UI to audit edits across departments.
- **Nextcloud Assistant (On-Prem AI).** Assistant keeps chat and writing helpers inside the Hub rather than sending document content to an external AI provider. You point it at your own deployment choices, which is the contrast with SaaS suites that pull content into a vendor cloud by default. It is aimed at organizations that want helper features without adding another custody question to a compliance checklist.

## How to Install Nextcloud Desktop Client on Mac

The Mac client is the connection between Finder and your server. Have your server URL and credentials ready before you start. After install you will connect the client once, pick which folders to sync, and let virtual files keep the Mac light.

1. **Download the Disk Image.** Open nextcloud.com/install, go to Desktop, and download the latest macOS package. The usual artifact is a pkg or dmg. The current builds cover Apple Silicon and Intel. For modern macOS choose the 34.x line.
2. **Run the Installer.** Open the download. For a pkg follow the wizard and enter your Mac admin password when asked. For a dmg drag the Nextcloud icon into Applications. Then launch the app from Spotlight or Launchpad.
3. **Connect to Your Server.** Pick Log in to your Nextcloud and enter the full server URL such as https://cloud.example.com. The wizard will open your browser to authorize the client. Click Grant Access to link the Mac to the account.
4. **Configure Sync Options.** Choose whether to sync everything or pick folders, and leave Use virtual files checked. That is the space saving default on macOS. Click Connect. Enable Launch on System Startup if you want sync to survive reboots.
