# Zoom

Published January 1, 2026 · Updated August 10, 2026

Video conferencing and web conferencing

Category: Communication · Free · Replaces GoToMeeting ($14/month) · [Official website](https://zoom.us)

## Install with Homebrew

`brew install --cask zoom`

## Quick take

Buy Zoom when your Mac work actually depends on hosting: client workshops, webinars, Rooms hardware, or a UC stack that already includes Phone. Basic is fine for rare short calls; Pro (roughly mid-teens USD per user monthly on annual billing, 30-hour meetings) is the default for freelancers and small teams; Business (~$18.33 annual per user, 300 participants, SSO) is where admin reality starts. Watch add-ons so the quote matches how you run events, and keep the official client patched. Teams still wins if Microsoft 365 already owns the budget.

Best for: Client-facing professionals who host meetings weekly, Organizations standardizing on Zoom UC, Educators and event hosts needing webinars/breakouts

## What is Zoom?

Zoom (product family branded Zoom Workplace) is the video communication platform that became default infrastructure for meetings, webinars, phone, chat, and AI-assisted notes and workplace apps. Founded by Eric Yuan, it remains one of the first installs on corporate and education Macs worldwide.

As of August 2026 Zoom is still very much in active use. Core Workplace plans are Basic (free), Pro, Business, and Enterprise. Independent 2026 pricing roundups and vendor pages describe Pro around $13.33-$14.16 per user/month when billed annually (about $16.99 monthly) and Business around $18.33 per user/month annually (about $21.99 monthly), with Enterprise quoted custom. Basic still caps group meetings at 40 minutes with up to 100 participants. Paid Pro lifts duration to 30 hours and expands AI Companion usage. Business raises participant capacity to 300 and adds admin and SSO-oriented controls. Enterprise scales toward 500-1000 participants with broader platform bundles (Phone PBX, Webinars, Rooms, advanced compliance).

AI Companion is embedded across meeting summary, chat assistance, and Workplace surfaces with plan-based limits (Basic is tightly capped; Pro and higher is marketed as unlimited in-meeting Companion for licensed users). The Mac app remains a first-class client with Apple Silicon support, virtual backgrounds, continuous updates, and the usual security patch cadence. Competitors include Microsoft Teams (bundle gravity), Google Meet (Workspace), Webex, and a long tail of lighter huddle tools.

If you only need occasional calls, Basic is enough. If you host clients weekly, Pro is the standard buy. If you need SSO, branding, and larger meetings, Business or Enterprise enters the conversation. Audit add-ons (Large Meetings, Webinars, Phone) because the quote is rarely only the base seat.

## Features

- **HD meetings and webinars.** Multi-participant video, screen share, breakout rooms, waiting rooms, polling, recording, and webinar add-ons for events.
- **AI Companion.** Meeting summaries, in-meeting assistance, and Workplace AI surfaces with free-tier limits and broader access on Pro and higher.
- **Team Chat, Mail, Calendar, Whiteboard, Clips.** Workplace expands beyond meetings into chat and productivity surfaces if you standardize on Zoom rather than only launching it for calls.
- **Zoom Phone and Rooms.** Cloud PBX and hardware room systems for organizations consolidating UC on Zoom, primarily Business and Enterprise packaging.
- **Admin, SSO, and compliance controls.** Business and Enterprise add managed domains, SSO, archival and DLP-oriented APIs, and stronger governance than Pro.
- **macOS desktop client.** Mac app with Apple Silicon support, virtual backgrounds, and frequent security updates. Still the primary way power users join.
- **Integrations.** Calendar, Slack and Teams adjacency, CRM connectors, and marketplace apps that embed Zoom into existing workflows.

## How to Install Zoom on Mac

Install Zoom Workplace from zoom.us/download or the Mac App Store and sign in with your account or SSO.

1. **Download the Mac client.** Get the latest Zoom Workplace macOS installer from zoom.us/download.
2. **Grant camera, mic, and screen recording permissions.** macOS will prompt. Required for video, audio, and screen share on Sequoia and Tahoe-class systems.
3. **Sign in or join from browser link.** Sign in for host features, or join meetings as a participant without hosting privileges.
4. **Enable auto-updates.** Keep the client current for security patches and AI Companion improvements.

## Pros

- Industry-default reliability and familiarity
- Clear free tier for light use
- Strong Mac client with frequent updates
- AI Companion value on paid plans
- Broad ecosystem (Phone, Rooms, Webinars)

## Cons

- Seat and add-on costs climb quickly for large orgs
- Free 40-minute cap is painful for real workshops
- Feature surface can feel heavy versus Meet for simple calls
- Security requires correct admin hardening; defaults are not a full program
- AI and data policies need legal review in regulated industries
