Google Gemini's free tier remains a practical ChatGPT Free/Plus alternative for everyday questions, multimodal prompts, and light productivity. A Gemini experience is available on the web and via Google's macOS app distribution (including Homebrew cask packaging for the Gemini Mac client). It will not mirror every Plus feature: model routing and limits differ, and Google account policies apply, but for users already in Google Workspace it is often the zero-friction substitute before standing up local LLMs. Pair it with Claude free for coding-heavy days and keep Plus only if you specifically need OpenAI exclusives like Sora.
